The Christian Journey
- Wednesdays 7:00 p.m. Valentine Hall, Michaux House
Follows Evening Prayer at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesdays
This Wednesday evening course allows for extensive inquiry in issues relevant to the ongoing faith journey of adults in the church. During Lent 2012, St. James’s will offer special programs.
The collection of books we call The Bible, the Old and New Testaments, are derived from the experiences of the people of Israel and the followers of Jesus on their continuing encounter with God. The process of scriptural reflection on the relationship with God have given meaning and comfort to men and women over the generations. Scripture has provided insight into ethical questions and hope in the midst of things we cannot understand. It is from the experience with God of the ancient Hebrews and the followers of Jesus that we learn of the nature of God and deepen our own relationship with God.
The roots of Biblical reflection date back to the third century and have continued to play a significant role in the Christian journey ever since. During the five Wednesdays in Lent the Christian Journey will offer two classes, one for those who want an introduction to studying the Bible and the second offering different methods of biblical study and reflection.
I. Where do I begin? An introduction to the Bible or “Bible 101″. Beginning with why the Bible is organized the way it is, its long history and diverse authorship, how to deal with the notes and cross-references, and the practical tools needed for studying the Bible. Above all we will consider the importance of approaching the Bible with respect—a book with a long history, complex traditions, and diverse authorship.
II. Going deeper: Experiencing different methods of Bible study.
Using some of the varied methods of refection and study including: Lectio Divina (divine reading), the African Method of Bible Study, Theological Reflection, Contemplative Prayer and Exegesis.
Parenting Forum
- Sundays, October 16, November 13, January 8 and March 18, 10:15-11:00 a.m. • Valentine Hall, Michaux House
Children are precious gifts from God and each is created with unique gifts and abilities. During the 2011-2012 program year, St. James’s will offer four parenting forums that take a look at the gifts of the whole child – the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual gifts they have to share and that we are blessed to take watch over and nurture. Contact Kent Duffey for more information.
