Mission Trips

St. James’s has so many valuable friends all over the world.
Our emphasis is on long-term relationships maintained by annual short-term missions to build, heal and grow. Regardless
of skills, adults and teens, families and singles – all are encouraged to take part. The cost of each mission is dependent on the number registered. Scholarships are available. For information, contact the missions coordinator, The Reverend Whitney Zimmerman or 804-355-1779, ext. 317. Register now, as team sizes are limited!

Honduras: Construction, education, relationship building
March 6-14, 2010

Our mission here is two-fold. At Our Little Roses Homes for Girls, a refuge for girls whose families cannot care for them, we play games, sing, pray, and share meals with the girls. Missioners will also work with members of San Jose de la Montaña Church to replace the roof on their parish hall. We learn from them, they learn from us, and it is an experience that leaves us both enriched. St. James’s has partnered with Christ Church, Charlottesville, on this mission. Deadline for sign-up is January 21.

Haiti: Construction, education, relationship building
May 7-15, 2010 (New)

St. James’s has been deeply active in the response to the earthquake on January 12 which devastated Haiti’s people and infrastructure.  At the request of the Bishop of Haiti, we have postponed our missions scheduled for March and April to May.  These interim weeks will allow for detailed assessments of the needs of the country’s people and churches.  As every church structure in Port-au-Prince was destroyed and hundreds of thousands of people have become internally displaced, our partnership and support are more vital than ever.  We ask that you continue to pray for the people of Haiti. We welcome you to contact Kent Duffey or Whitney Zimmerman to be notified with updates in this mission’s planning.

Sudan: Relationship building and Medical care
May 24-June 5, 2010

The Episcopal church is growing faster in Africa than anywhere else on earth and is an essential source for stability and relief work. We will serve both the Hope and Resurrection School and the Mustard Seed Clinic in southern Sudan. The school offers life-giving education to young Sudanese who are the greatest hope for a peaceful and prosperous Sudan. We need at least three medical professionals
of any specialty for this mission to serve at the clinic. Deadline for sign-up is February 10. Team meetings will be held on Jan. 21 and March 25. Contact Angie Wilcox or call 804-590-9669.

Appalachia: Construction, relationship building
May 8-14, 2010

We have partnered with St. Timothy’s Outreach Center
on Barnes Mountain in eastern Kentucky to help repair and upgrade the homes of impoverished members
of this Appalachian community. We will enjoy a community dinner with residents and help their children
with crafts projects and games. No prior construction
skills or experience are necessary but are most welcomed.
It is a wonderful opportunity to see how diverse our country is and how much help you can offer your neighbors. Deadline for sign-up is March 26. Contact: Chris Edwards or call (804) 355-1779, ext. 334.

Richmond City: Helping inner-city children, relationship building
summer 2010

Adult missionaries from St. James's are invited to take part in an inner-city mission that unites churches with inner-city children to provide enriching experiences and deepen our relationship with our city and neighbors!  While guests at the Richmond Hill's Retreat Center, we will serve at a Church Hill summer camp for children during the day and, in the evening study scripture, engage in small group work with other churches and learn about mission challenges and opportunities in Richmond. The mission is one week long.  For dates and cost please contact Whitney Zimmerman  or Nancy Warman for information.

Alaska Youth Trip: Construction, relationship building
summer 2010

Our parish youth will help construct a fellowship hall for the Alaskan Diocese Camp and Conference Center in the town of Manley Hot Springs. In the past five years, church youth and adult leaders have poured foundations, framed walls, built porches, and painted existing cabins at the Center.
We also work within the Manley Hot Springs community.
All ninth through twelfth graders are eligible to participate. This trip is tentatively scheduled for late July. Contact: Chris Edwards or call 804-355-1779, ext. 334.
