Reverend Dr. Robert D. Friend has been called as a Priest Associate on the St. James’s staff, where he will be offering pastoral care, lead some courses and help out occasionally with Sunday services.
Bob retired from parish ministry as rector of All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Henrico County on September 30, 2011, after ten years of ministry there. Among his successes were revitalizing the parish’s overseas mission ministry, invigorating the youth of the parish to take on mission programs and increasing Christian education opportunities within the parish, and he was instrumental in continuing the healing services at All Saints’.
Bob graduated from the University of Virginia in 1973 and entered Virginia Theological Seminary. He was ordained priest on December 18, 1976. He spent six years serving at Eastern Shore Chapel in Virginia Beach and then was then called to serve at St. Anne’s Parish in Annapolis, Maryland, leading their ministry to the midshipmen of the U. S. Naval Academy until 1987.
On returning to the Diocese of Virginia in 1987, he spent 14 years as rector of St. Francis’, Great Falls, and completed his doctor of ministry degree at Virginia Theological Seminary prior to being called to All Saints’. He has served in numerous capacities within the Diocese of Virginia: on the Executive Board from 1990-1993, elected to the Standing Committee in 2002, as dean of Region XII from 2004 to 2007, on the board at Roslyn and as a founding member of the River Road Clergy Association.
