St. John's Church Tappahannock

Rappahannock River Valley Historic Churches

Spring 2020 (TBD), 7:45 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Did you know that it was dangerous to be an Episcopalian during and immediately following the Revolutionary War, due to the Church’s ties with the British crown? A generation later therefore saw a boom in missionary activity. Join us on this pilgrimage to three historic parishes in the Rappahannock River Valley, planted 1800-1869 by the Rev. John Peyton McGuire, “The Apostle of the Rappahannock.” We’ll learn more about the history of the Episcopal Church and its theology through these three parishes and their architecture, and also make a stop at the Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge to learn more about the intimate connection between the Church and the land. Cost: $65 non-refundable, includes bus ticket and boxed lunch. Deadline to register: TBD; minimum of 30 participants, maximum of 38. Questions: Mary Richie McGuire. Meet at the James River Bus Depot (900 N. Allen Ave., Richmond, VA 23220) for this one-day pilgrimage.
